Ukraine Gains CERN Associate Membership

Ukraine has become an associate member of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN).

Ukrainian News Agency learned this from a statement made by the Ministry of Science and Education.

The associate membership of Ukraine strengthens the long-term partnership between CERN and the Ukrainian scientific community.

Associate Membership allows Ukraine to take part in meetings of the CERN Council and its committees (Finance Committee and Scientific Policy Committee).

It also makes Ukrainian scientists eligible for staff appointments. Finally, Ukrainian industry is henceforth entitled to bid for CERN contracts, thus opening up opportunities for industrial collaboration in areas of advanced technology.

"Today [October 5], Ukraine becomes an associate member State of CERN. This follows official notification to CERN that Ukraine's Parliament has ratified the agreement, signed with CERN in October 2013, granting Ukraine that associate member status," CERN said.

Ukraine and CERN signed a cooperation agreement in 1993, and a joint declaration in 2011, setting priorities in scientific and technical cooperation. Ukraine's relationship with CERN dates back much further, principally through CERN's cooperation with the Joint Institute of Nuclear Research (link is external) (JINR), of which Ukraine is a member.

The Ministry says that Ukraine will paying much less fees than the 22 CERN member states.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, President Petro Poroshenko on September 19, 2014 signed the law to ratify the agreement with CERN on Ukraine's associate membership.

CERN is the world's largest laboratory for High Energy Physics, based in Switzerland.

It employs about 2,500 people, about 8,000 physicists and engineers from 580 universities and institutes of 85 countries to conduct CERN international experiments.

The most important and well-known CERN project is the Large Hadron Collider.
