The Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People intends to appeal at the European Court of Human Rights against the decision of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation to uphold the decision to recognize the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people an extremist organization and ban its activities.

Verkhovna Rada deputy from the Bloc of Petro Poroshenko faction Refat Chubarov, the chairperson of the Mejlis, announced this at a press conference, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

"The next stage will be an appeal at the European Court of Human Rights," he said.

Chubarov said documents regarding the appeal would be prepared in the near future.

Chubarov thanked the Ukrainian authorities, including President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, for the tough reaction to the prohibition of the Mejlis.

He said he was expecting on Friday statements from international legal organizations regarding the decision to recognize the Mejlis an extremist organization and ban its activities.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine is demanding that Russia immediately cancel the decision of the Supreme Court of Russia declaring the Mejlis an extremist organization and prohibiting its activity.

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko calls the decision of the Supreme Court of Russia prohibiting the Mejlis xenophobic.
