Freedom House, an international non-governmental organization, believes that the Russian Supreme Court's decision to uphold the banning of the Crimean Tartar Mejlis confirms the repression of the Crimean Tatar people.

Freedom House announced this in a statement, Ukrainian News reports.

On Thursday, the Russian Supreme Court upheld the decision to declare the Crimean Tartar Mejlis as an extremist organization and ban its activities on the territory of Russia.

The court dismissed an appeal by members of the Crimean Tartar Mejlis.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, the "Supreme Court" of the Russia-annexed Crimea banned the Crimean Tartar Mejlis in April.

Parliamentary Deputy Refat Chubarov of the Petro Poroshenko Bloc faction, who is the leader of the Crimean Tartar Mejlis, has said that the level of repression in the Crimea is increasing and that members of the Mejlis face increased threat as a result of its declaration as an extremist organization.
