United States Not To Recognize Duma Elections In Crimea

The United States will not recognize the elections to the Russian Duma on the territory of the Crimea annexed by Russia.

United States Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch gave the position in an interview with the internet paper "Yevropeiska Pravda", Ukrainian News Agency reports.

Ambassador Yovanovitch emphasized that the United States would never recognize the Crimea as part of Russia.

The Ambassador said the sanctions imposed against Russia following the annexation of the peninsular were rather tough. However, the United States would further seek opportunities to strengthen diplomatic signals that the Crimea remains a part of Ukraine.

She said the United States followed the process of release of Ukrainian citizens illegally held in Crimea.

As Ukrainian News Agency reported, the European Commission will not recognize the elections to the Russian State Duma on the territory of the Crimea.

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has called on countries of G7 and member states of the European Union not to recognize legitimacy of the Russian parliamentary elections in Crimea.

The Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe is not intending to send observers to the elections of the State Duma of Russia on the territory of the Crimea annexed by Russia.
