Foreign Affairs Minister Pavlo Klimkin is pushing for the global community to recognise the coercive mental examination of Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People Ilmi Umerov as a form of torture.

The Minister announced this on Twitter, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, Umerov was released from the mental health clinic September 7.

His defence team regards his coercive mental examination as a torture.

August 11, a court in the Russia-occupied Crimea decided to send Umerov for coercive mental examination.

In May the Mejlis said Umerov had been detained in the Russia-occupied Crimea by the Federal Security Service of Russia.

The Office of the Prosecutor of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea opened an investigation upon the detention.
