Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Heorhii Tykhyi said that Hungary would lose more than USD 1 billion if gas supplies to Ukraine are cut off. He said this in a comment to journalists, the Yevropeiska Pravda publication writes.
"If Prime Minister Orbán does decide to terminate it, we believe that the only consequence of this will be the deprivation of the Hungarian economy and Hungarians of more than a billion dollars," Tykhyi said.
According to the Foreign Ministry spokesman, this is the amount Hungary received for gas exports to Ukraine last year.
"The only consequence will be that Viktor Orbán will take this billion dollars from the pockets of Hungarians. It's his business if he wants to do it. Ukraine has the necessary volumes of gas today. Ukraine knows where to get the necessary volumes of gas even if Hungary stops supplying it," he said.
The Foreign Ministry spokesman added that "Ukraine, unlike Hungary, is a diversified country and has taken the necessary measures to ensure that energy supplies are diversified."
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, the day before, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said, that his country would gradually stop gas supplies to Ukraine until oil transit through the Druzhba pipeline is resumed.
