The West African country of Ghana insists on engaging the russian federation in finding joint ways to prevent the recruitment of its citizens to participate in the war in Ukraine. According to estimates, 55 Ghanaians have been killed at the front since the beginning of the full-scale invasion.

It was reported by Bloomberg.

According to the country's Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, there has been no response from the russian side.

"We need to engage them even more," he said.

Bloomberg reminded that Ablakwa recently visited Ukraine to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and negotiate the release of two Ghanaians who were captured. According to him, they were recruited by private agents who promised them jobs, but in the end they were sent to the front line to fight for russia.

"There is growing concern about the recruitment of Africans to fight for the Russian army, which is short of personnel in the war against Ukraine. Kenya and South Africa have said that they have recently repatriated citizens who were deceived into signing contracts with the Russian army," the publication noted.

At the same time, Ukrainian intelligence reports that more than 1,780 Africans from 36 countries are fighting against Ukraine. Ablakwa emphasized that 272 of them are Ghanaians, 55 of whom were killed and two were captured.

The minister added that the salary they were promised was between USD 30,000 and USD 40,000 a year.

"The nonprofit research organization Inpact said in a report this month that of the 1,417 Africans it identified as fighting for Russia, 234 were Ghanaians, 335 were Cameroonians and 361 were Egyptians, representing the countries with the largest number of citizens recruited to fight," Bloomberg emphasized.
