US President Donald Trump touched on the topic of the war between russia and Ukraine in his annual address to Congress and told the story of a Ukrainian refugee who was killed in the United States. This is reported by NBC News.
In his speech, Trump emphasized that his administration is working to stop the fighting and reduce casualties.
"We are working very hard to stop the ninth war, the killing and the massacre between russia and Ukraine, where 25,000 soldiers are being killed every month, a war that would never have happened if I were President," Trump said.
He devoted a separate part of his speech to the story of 23-year-old Ukrainian Iryna Zarutska, who was killed in Charlotte, North Carolina. Her mother, Hanna Zarutska, was in the audience, to whom the President addressed her.
"We are proud to have here today a woman who went through hell - Hanna Zarutska. In 2022, she and her beautiful daughter, a very beautiful young woman Iryna, left war-torn Ukraine to live with relatives in the city of Charlotte, North Carolina," the American leader emphasized.
According to Trump, the girl was a victim of an attack last summer.
"No one will forget the look of Iryna's facial expression when she looked at her attacker in the last seconds of her life. She fled war to be killed by a criminal. Ms. Zarutska, today I promise justice for your beautiful daughter, Iryna," Donald Trump said.
The Ukrainian woman's body was found on August 22 at a light rail station in Charlotte. According to police, she suffered fatal stab wounds. The suspect - 34-year-old Decarlos Brown - was arrested at the scene and charged with first-degree murder. The motive for the crime is currently being established.
