Today, January 18, the European Union will hold an emergency meeting of ambassadors. This is due to US President Donald Trump's statement on new duties through Greenland. It was reported by Reuters.

"Ambassadors from the European Union's 27 countries will convene on Sunday for an emergency meeting after U.S. President Donald Trump vowed a wave of increasing tariffs on European allies until the United States is allowed to buy Greenland," the media outlet writes.

It is noted that the meeting was scheduled by Cyprus, which holds a six-month EU presidency. EU diplomats said that the meeting was scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, US President Donald Trump, during his first term (2017-2021), repeatedly expressed his readiness to buy Greenland from Denmark. In particular, he voiced a financial offer of USD 600 million annually for the lifetime use of the island.

On January 4, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called on Trump to "stop threatening" Greenland and emphasized that the United States has no right to annex any part of the Kingdom of Denmark, which includes Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands.

Against the backdrop of these statements, on January 13, a bill was introduced in the US Congress on the possible annexation of Greenland and granting the island the status of an American state. Its author, Republican Randy Fine, suggests that Trump could start negotiations with Denmark and further amend federal legislation.

US President Donald Trump stated that the United States needs Greenland for the Golden Dome and NATO, he added, should pave the way to it. In addition, he noted that he was taking US military power to a new level.

Meanwhile, Norway has sent two armed forces officers to Greenland to increase military presence and security in the country.
