Merz warns of threat of energy collapse in Ukraine due to russian strikes

In a letter to parliamentary coalition members, Chancellor Friedrich Merz described the state of Ukraine's energy sector as pre-crisis. The head of the German government stressed that the situation is taking on signs of a humanitarian danger, which requires coordinated action by the CDU/CSU and SPD factions. This is reported by ZDF.

Merz stated that the russian aggression has entered a phase of total destruction of civilian infrastructure. He noted that the russian dictator is ignoring any calls for a ceasefire, instead choosing the tactic of the largest strikes on critical facilities in Ukraine in order to provoke a collapse in the fourth year of the invasion.

The Chancellor emphasized that targeted attacks on the energy system in the winter have obvious signs of war crimes, since their goal is terror against the civilian population.

"For the fourth year in a row, Ukrainians have been forced to celebrate the New Year holidays under rocket fire and in conditions of constant power outages," the head of the German government emphasized.

Despite the critical situation, the German government continues to insist on the need for an early end to hostilities. However, Merz clearly stated: a sustainable peace is impossible without effective security guarantees for Ukraine.

This is about forming a system of long-term commitments from the United States and European partners. According to the Chancellor, only such measures can become a reliable shield that will make it impossible for russian aggression to repeat in the future.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, as a result of another russian attack on the night of January 5, energy facilities in several regions of Ukraine were hit.

On the night of January 5, russian occupiers struck energy facilities in the Kyiv Region.
