President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the issue of territorial concessions should be decided by the people of Ukraine. This can be done through elections or a referendum.
Zelenskyy made the statement during a conversation with journalists, RBC-Ukraine reports.
According to him, during the negotiation process, the United States proposes to create a so-called "free economic zone" in part of the Donetsk Region. At the same time, the aggressor country russia calls this territory a "demilitarized" zone. According to the plan proposed by the United States, Ukraine should withdraw its troops from this territory, and russia should not build up its army.
This proposal raises a number of questions. It is not clear who will control this territory. It is also unclear how the monitoring of whether russia has actually withdrawn its forces to the required distance and is not deploying its military under the guise of civilians will be controlled.
Zelenskyy believes that any issue related to the territories should be based on the position of the Ukrainian people.
"I believe that the people of Ukraine will answer this question. In the format of elections or in the format of a referendum, but there must be a position of the people of Ukraine," the President said.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on December 11, Axios wrote, citing sources, that on Saturday, December 13, in Paris, representatives of Ukraine, Ukraine, the United States and Europe will meet to discuss the "peace plan".
On December 9, the British edition of the Financial Times reported, citing sources, that the United States gave Zelenskyy only a few days to respond to the American settlement proposal.
