Power unit of one of russian nuclear power plants suspends work after operation of air defense systems of russian army

One of the power units of the Novovoronezh nuclear power plant stopped work as a result of an attack by drones on the Voronezh Oblast on the night of today, August 21.

This is evidenced by reports from local authorities and russian media, the Ukrainian News agency reports.

At around 3:00 a.m., the governor of the Voronezh Oblast, Aleksandr Gusev, wrote on his Telegram channel that at night the air defense systems of the russian army allegedly discovered and destroyed more than five UAVs over the region.

According to him, as a result of the fall of the UAV, the energy facility was damaged.

"Several villages remain without electricity, a number of passenger trains have been detained. Emergency services are preparing to begin liquidation of the consequences," Gusev wrote.

He added that there were no deaths or injuries as a result of the incident.

Later, TASS reported, citing the Rosenergoatom concern, that the Novovoronezh NPP had a temporary shutdown of power unit No. 7 from the network.

The concern's press service did not provide any other details, emphasizing that there was no safety threat due to the shutdown of the power unit.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on July 16, 2024, one of the power units at the Rostov NPP in the Rostov Oblast of the russian federation experienced an emergency shutdown.

At the end of August 2024, one of the nuclear reactors at the Rostov NPP also experienced an emergency shutdown.
