Ukraine accumulates 10 billion cubic meters of natural gas in storages

Natural gas reserves in Ukrainian underground gas storage facilities (UGS) exceeded 10 billion cubic meters on August 5.

This is stated in the ExPro publication, the Ukrainian News agency reports.

The report states that the storage facilities are 32.3% full.

This year's reserves in storage facilities remain the lowest in at least the last 12 years, but the gap from last year is narrowing.

For the first time since the beginning of the year, the gap has dropped below 10%.

Thus, compared to last year, UGS storages store 9% or 990 million cubic meters less gas.

Gas injection volumes remain significantly higher than last year.

Thus, in July 2025, 1.69 billion cubic meters of natural gas were injected into Ukrainian UGS, 1.9 times more than in July 2024.

This is also the largest monthly volume of gas injection into underground storage facilities in two years, since July 2023.

At the beginning of August, gas injection volumes remain at about 50 million cubic meters per day, 1.8 times higher than at the beginning of August 2024.

In general, since the beginning of this year's injection season (April 17), almost 4.65 billion cubic meters of natural gas have been injected into Ukrainian underground storage facilities, almost 1.6 times more than last year.

Higher volumes of gas injection into underground storage facilities are primarily associated with active imports of natural gas.

Thus, in July, import volumes increased to 833 million cubic meters, the highest level in almost two years.

Since the beginning of August, gas imports have decreased by 26%, but remain at the level of over 20 million cubic meters per day.

As in July, the bulk of natural gas is imported by Naftogaz of Ukraine.

To accumulate 13.2 billion cubic meters of gas in storage by November 1, Ukraine needs to pump about 3.2 billion cubic meters in August-October.

Part of the volumes will be covered by domestic production.

In addition, Ukraine needs to import about 1.7 billion cubic meters of gas during August-October, which is quite realistic with the current import rates.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, as of July 17, Ukraine pumped more than 9 billion cubic meters of natural gas into underground gas storage facilities.

This is slightly more than 29% of the storage capacity.
