Against the backdrop of damage to gas infrastructure by russian shelling, critically low reserves in gas storage facilities, and the closure of existing production facilities, Ukraine is increasing purchases of russian gas through Europe.
The First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Energy and Housing and Communal Services Oleksii Kucherenko has stated this on the air of the Pershyi TV channel.
"I have to disappoint you, but we are definitely buying Russian gas, which comes in through the Turkish Stream, goes to Serbia and Hungary," said MP Kucherenko.
According to him, due to the gas shortage, Ukraine was forced to end the heating season earlier this year and it is good that "we made it to the end of March."
Given that russian shelling has damaged or destroyed a significant part of the Ukrainian gas production infrastructure (according to NJSC Naftogaz, JSC UkrGasVydobuvannya has lost almost 50% of its gas production), our purchases of russian gas in Europe are only increasing.
According to Bloomberg, in 2025 Ukraine may import a record 5 billion cubic meters of gas from Europe due to the depletion of its own reserves.
Against the backdrop of a gas shortage, the authorities in Ukraine continue to block the work of gas production companies of the Smart Energy group in the Poltava and Kharkiv Regions, which only increases Ukraine's gas losses. According to the Acting General Director of the Smart Energy group of companies, Oleksii Zaets, by the end of 2025, due to this situation, the companies will not be able to produce 78 million cubic meters of gas. Naftogaz will have to import this volume, given that the average price of produced Ukrainian gas on the domestic market (about USD 400 per 1,000 cubic meters) is significantly lower than the price of imported gas (about USD 600 per 1,000 cubic meters).
During the blockade of enterprises in 2023-2024, the state lost 195 million cubic meters of gas and UAH 1.65 billion in tax revenues.
