US President Donald Trump has banned the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) Elon Musk from mass layoffs and reminded the ministers that they are the ones running their departments.
This is reported by Politico, citing sources.
Trump recalled that Musk only makes recommendations to the departments, and does not make decisions on personnel and policy.
The meeting took place after a series of mass layoffs and threats to civil servants by the billionaire, which created widespread uncertainty in the federal government. DOGE's actions have caused resistance in court and criticism from Democratic lawmakers and some Republicans.
Musk was present during this conversation and agreed with Trump. The billionaire also acknowledged some of DOGE's mistakes.
Trump said that he wants to keep responsible employees in the government, and not mass layoffs. Despite this, tens of thousands of civil servants have lost their jobs en masse in recent weeks. The layoffs were not related to productivity issues and may have violated civil service laws.
Later, the President told reporters that he wants Cabinet members to "keep all the people" they need, while the administration will still seek cuts.
Recall that Elon Musk heads DOGE - the Department of Government Efficiency. This is not an official government body, but a private initiative to advise the White House on cutting costs and implementing an "entrepreneurial approach to government."
As Ukrainian News Agency reported, Trump earlier signed an executive order that expands the powers of Elon Musk's government spending reduction program, the so-called Department of Government Efficiency.
