Irpin Mayor sent to arrest for 60 days in case with witnesses who are political opponents – media

Yesterday, the Pecherskyi District Court of Kyiv chose a preventive measure for Irpin Mayor Oleksandr Markushyn in the form of 60 days of arrest with the possibility of bail of UAH 40 million. The decision was made by Judge Svitlana Hrechana. The Mayor calls this case a political order, since the main witnesses and applicants in it are his political opponents — former Irpin Mayor Volodymyr Karpliuk and MP Oleksandr Pashchynskyi, UNIAN reported.

With the assistance of the Mayor, dozens of criminal cases were opened regarding the activities of Karpliuk and his enterprises during his time as mayor, and Markushyn repeatedly publicly stated about the revealed facts of document forgery.

The case against Markushyn was opened by the State Bureau of Investigation. He is accused of illegally crossing the state border in August 2022 during martial law for personal reasons to visit family in Italy. Despite the fact that Markushyn is a single father and has the right to travel abroad even without registering in the Shliakh system.

The court did not take into account any positive characteristics, including numerous awards, including the medal For Conscientious Service (2021), the order For Courage of the 3rd degree. (March 24, 2022), the NSDC award Defender of Ukraine (2022), the medal from the Defense Intelligence For Assistance to Military Intelligence of Ukraine of the 2nd degree (2022); the medal For Special Service of the 3rd degree from the Commander of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Recall, on January 23, the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) announced suspicion of Irpin Mayor Oleksandr Markushyn in allegedly illegally crossing the border. The Mayor called it a "custom case" and stated that in this way businessman Volodymyr Karpliuk wants to remove him from office "on the eve of a critically important session" at which council members are to consider the issue of canceling the lease of land under illegal buildings to which Karpliuk is related.
