Fico wants Slovakia to get gas through TurkStream. Erdogan promises to discuss it with putin

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has asked Turkey for help in securing supplies of russian natural gas. Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan has promised to help find a solution.

Fico and Erdogan made the announcement at a joint press conference in Ankara on January 20, Bloomberg reports.

Fico said that an alternative route for russian gas supplies to Ukraine could be found using the TurkStream gas pipeline.

"Let's take a step. Let’s reach a conclusion on Slovakia’s natural gas needs," Erdogan said.

He added that the Turkish Foreign Minister would contact the russian authorities to discuss the issue. Erdogan also said that he himself intended to talk about it with russian dictator vladimir putin.

According to Fico, next week the Slovak Economy Minister will travel to Turkey to discuss russian gas supplies.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on January 1, 2025, Ukraine's gas transportation system stopped the transit of russian gas to European countries. At the same time, Kyiv refused to extend the agreement with moscow on the continuation of gas pumping.

Recall that on January 9, Fico said that Slovakia is considering the possibility of introducing measures against Ukraine due to its refusal to resume gas transit from russia.

Earlier, the Slovak Prime Minister threatened to limit support for Ukrainian refugees in Slovakia.

He also stated that Slovakia would stop supplying electricity to Ukraine due to Kyiv's reluctance to resume transit of russian gas.
