Netanyahu decides not to travel to 80th anniversary of Auschwitz liberation despite Poland promising not to arrest him

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will not travel to Poland for the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in Auschwitz. Poland, as a country that ratified the Rome Statute, should have arrested Netanyahu, but promised not to do so.

This was reported by the Prime Minister's aide in a commentary for The Times of Israel.

Piotr Cywiński, director of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum, added that discussions about whether Benjamin Netanyahu would face arrest if he came were a "media provocation" - "there was never any indication" that the Prime Minister was planning a visit to Poland.

Despite Netanyahu's absence, a large delegation is expected from Israel.

As a reminder, the International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and Hamas leader Ibrahim Al Masri for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.

In their decision to issue the warrants, the ICC judges stated that there are reasonable grounds to believe that Netanyahu and Gallant are criminally responsible for the famine in Gaza and the persecution of Palestinians.

In turn, the Office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu criticized the ICC's decision to issue arrest warrants against him and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, calling it "anti-Semitic."

And US President Joe Biden criticized the ICC's arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.

In response, the Polish government guaranteed that Israeli representatives, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, would be safe and would be able to freely participate in the celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz.

It should be noted that in September, russian dictator vladimir putin made his first visit to an ICC member state after an arrest warrant was issued for him in March 2023 for the abduction of children from the occupied territories of Ukraine.

On September 3, a spokesman for the Mongolian government said that the country had been unable to arrest russian dictator vladimir putin because it was dependent on imports of russian petroleum products.
