Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has proposed to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to organize a meeting to discuss Kyiv's suspension of russian natural gas transit to Europe.
It was stated in a video message that Fico published on his official Facebook page today, January 13.
According to Fico, Ukraine's decision to stop russian gas transit allegedly causes great harm to Ukraine itself, as well as to consumers in Slovakia and the European Union.
The suspension of gas transit, Fico added, allegedly does not contribute to either bilateral or multilateral relations.
"I have a different opinion on your decision to stop gas transit through Ukraine. My position is not alone in Europe. Even if I do not consider the fact that Slovakia is losing EUR 500 million a year due to the cessation of gas transit to be absolutely decisive, the impact of your decision on the competitiveness of the European Union, the organization to which you are applying for membership, is decisive," Fico said.
He said he would like to continue a "constructive and mutually respectful" dialogue with Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal.
In addition, Fico invited Zelenskyy to a meeting, which, he added, should take place "as soon as possible." The meeting could take place near the state border between Ukraine and Slovakia.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on January 9, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said that Bratislava was considering taking measures against Ukraine for its refusal to continue the transit of russian gas.
Recall, in early January, Fico said that Slovakia would limit support for Ukrainian refugees if Kyiv did not resume gas transit.
And on December 27, 2024, the head of the Slovak government threatened to stop electricity supplies to Ukraine.
