The Motor (Transport) Insurance Bureau of Ukraine (MTIBU) warns that from January 1, 2025, the "Green Card" policy (mandatory civil liability insurance for vehicle owners in European countries) when traveling abroad must be issued in advance, not on the day of departure.
This is stated in the MTIBU message, Ukrainian News Agency reports.
"Planning a trip abroad in 2025 in your own car? Don't forget to take care of the international driver's liability insurance "Green Card" in advance, at least a day before the trip! MTIBU warns that from January 1, 2025, the "Green Card" insurance certificate will come into force from 00:00 of the date of the start of its validity period, determined by such a contract, but not earlier than the beginning of the day following the entry of such a contract into the Unified Centralized Database," the message says.
This means:
An international insurance contract must be issued at least a day before the trip.
Information about the concluded insurance contract must be entered into the Unified Centralized Database of MTIBU, otherwise the document may be declared invalid.
The absence of a valid "Green Card" insurance certificate may be the reason for refusal to cross the border.
MTIBU recommends planning to issue a "Green Card" in advance to avoid unpleasant surprises on the day of travel.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, the "Green Card" is a system of insurance protection for victims of road accidents, regardless of their country of residence and the country of registration of the vehicle. Ukraine has been a member of this vehicle insurance system since 2005.
