Native of Kyiv, who testified against Trump, wins election to US Congress

The race for the US Congress in Virginia was won by a native of Kyiv, Democrat Eugene Vindman, who in 2019 played a role in the impeachment of Donald Trump. The victory over his Republican opponent secured his seat in the House of Representatives.

This is reported by The Associated Press.

So, Vindman narrowly defeated Republican Derrick Anderson in Virginia's 7th District.

"Together we did what many did not think was possible. It is a testament to the power of the American experience that an immigrant who fled the Soviet regime and came to this great country with less than USD 800 in his pocket now stands here as an elected congressman of the United States House of Representatives,” Vindman said in a statement.

Vindman, a former army officer, focused his campaign on abortion rights and the threat posed by MAGA extremism to democracy.

However, despite being new to politics, Vindman rose to national prominence after making a splash with his brother during the first impeachment trial of then-President Donald Trump.

In particular, Vindman and his twin brother Alexander were military personnel, who expressed concern about Trump's call to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in 2019, in which Trump demanded an investigation into President Joe Biden and his son Hunter.

The New York Times writes about it as follows: the twin brothers became famous when "they provided incriminating testimony about President Donald Trump's ties to Ukraine, which formed the basis of the impeachment case against him."

It will be recalled that in 2019, the United States announced the start of the impeachment proceedings against the then President Donald Trump due to alleged pressure on Zelenskyy during a telephone conversation for political gain. And Volker, US Special Representative for Ukraine Negotiations, resigned after his name was mentioned in the whistleblower's complaint about Donald Trump's pressure on Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Then Alexander Vindman, the brother of Eugene Vindman, a lieutenant colonel of the US Army and an expert on Ukraine at the National Security Council, said that he was offered the position of Minister of Defense of Ukraine.

Additionally, the Pentagon's Office of the Inspector General released a report that concluded that Eugene Vindman, the brother of retired Army Colonel Alexander Vindman, a key witness in the first impeachment trial of former President Trump, may have been retaliated against by then-Presidential officials.

It was reported that Eugene Vindman was the whistleblower, who wrote an anonymous complaint about the telephone conversation between former US President Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskyy, where he expressed concern that the American President tried to use the help of a foreign leader for his own purposes in the election campaign, which later became the basis for the impeachment process against the former US President.
