Germany and France did not support plan to overcome Hungary's veto on aid to Ukraine – media

Two EU countries, France and Germany, did not support the proposal, which aims to bypass Hungary's veto, which blocks the allocation of more than EUR 6 billion in aid to Ukraine, Bloomberg reports.

The European External Action Service proposed allowing EU member states to make voluntary contributions to the European Peace Fund.

In the future, this would allow funds to be directed to aid only by the decision of individual countries, without the unanimous support of all EU countries.

However, some member states, including France and Germany, have expressed concern about setting a precedent that could jeopardize the future of the European Peace Fund as a foreign policy tool, the agency's interlocutors said.

The agency also notes that in some countries, voluntary contributions may require approval by national parliaments, adding another layer of complexity.

Bloomberg's sources also say that it is currently unclear what support the proposed plan will receive in the EU.

Back in March, the Council of the EU agreed to the creation of a Ukraine Assistance Fund within the framework of the European Peace Fund, the funds from which were to go to member states to compensate for military supplies to Ukraine.

It is known that Hungary is blocking the allocation of billions of euros from the European Peace Fund to finance military aid to Ukraine.
