State Water Agency confirms contamination of Seim and Desna Rivers

Pollution from the Seim River has already reached the Desna River. No chemical or highly toxic substances were detected; this is organic pollution.

This was stated by the head of the State Water Agency, Mykhailo Yanchuk on the air of the telethon.

"At this moment, we can state that the Seim River has been polluted. We are recording the movement of this pollution. It has already reached the Desna River," Yanchuk said.

He added that today the forces of the State Water Agency, the relevant subordinate water management organizations and laboratories, as well as the laboratories of the State Ecoinspection, are conducting constant daily monitoring of the water quality of the Seim and Desna Rivers.

"Chemical or highly toxic pollutants have not been recorded. This is organic pollution," the head of the State Water Agency emphasized.

Yanchuk also emphasized that now the accumulated efforts of all services to eliminate this situation, with the involvement of scientists and additional experts, work to eliminate this pollution continues.

"It is also worth noting that, on the instructions of Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, a meeting of the State Commission on Technological and Environmental Safety and Emergency Situations will be held today. Based on the results of this meeting, appropriate instructions will be given to the bodies of executive power and local self-government regarding the localization and liquidation of the consequences," the official explained.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, the State Environmental Inspection did not find exceeding the maximum permissible concentrations of organic and mineral substances in the Desna River within the Kyiv Region, but they recommend not to swim or fish there.

It was previously reported that due to severe water pollution in the rivers Desna and Seim, fish and river birds are dying.
