Bulgaria suspends military assistance to Ukraine - Defense Ministry

Bulgaria will no longer supply weapons to Ukraine, as it is time to sit down at the negotiating table. The country’s Defense Minister, Dimitar Stoyanov, has announced this, Politico reported on Tuesday, June 9.

Since the start of russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, Bulgaria has sent 13 aid packages to Ukraine. According to the country’s defense minister, the continuation of the war leads only to human casualties and exhaustion.

"We have already made it clear that the war in Ukraine will not be resolved on the battlefield. We are witnessing a war of attrition, and no matter how many weapons are stockpiled, the only result is the loss of human lives. It is time to sit down at the negotiating table," Stoyanov said.

In addition, Bulgaria plans to increase defense spending to 5 percent of GDP, as required by NATO.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on March 30, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Bulgarian Acting Prime Minister Andrey Gyurov signed a security agreement in Kyiv that provides for long-term military support, joint arms production, and enhanced cooperation in the energy sector.
