A Ukrainian carol contest was held in Ukraine, with teachers and children from all over Ukraine taking part, – Gnat Korobko
Children and teachers from different regions of Ukraine took part in the carol singing competition 'Give me a coin, uncle,' organized by the educational project 'Know Your Ukraine.' The winners received a set of contemporary literature on traditional Ukrainian culture and Ukrainian spring traditions, and kits for pysanka egg painting. This was announced by the project's co-author and patron Gnat Korobko in a comment to "Ukrainian News".
'In early January, we invited educational institutions and schoolchildren to take part in the 'Give me a coin, uncle" competition. To do this, they had to shoot a video of children, either alone or with adults, carolling in their communities or schools. It was important that this was not a staged performance, but one that reflected our tradition, where people would go caroling together from house to house. After that, those who wished to do so posted the video on social media on their public profiles. The winners received a set of contemporary literature on traditional Ukrainian culture and Ukrainian spring rituals, as well as kits for pysanka egg painting to start preparing for Easter," – said Gnat Korobko.
The experts of the course 'Know Your Ukraine. Christmas' awarded the victory to children from the southern and eastern regions of Ukraine, where the tradition of caroling had been displaced from the cultural space for decades.
'That is why initiatives such as ours are very important, as they help to revive Christmas traditions in regions where this living connection has been broken. We are particularly pleased to see children's interest in their native culture and their willingness to continue Ukrainian traditions and reinforce their value in their communities,' said Gnat Korobko.
In particular, the winners of the carol contest 'Give me a coin, uncle' were:
- Teplodar Lyceum O.P. Medvedkov, Teplodar, Odesa region
- Lyceum No. 38, Kyiv
- Romanova Balka Lyceum, Romanova Balka village, Mykolaiv region
- Volodymyr Lyceum, Volodymyrivka village, Mykolaiv region
- Kindergarten No. 193 of the Kharkiv City Council
- Tsipkivska Gymnasium, Krasnolutska Village Council, Poltava region
'Know Your Ukraine' is an educational project about traditional Ukrainian culture, which, in partnership with cultural institutions and with the support of patron Gnat Korobko, creates training courses, lessons and practical materials for schools, educators and the wide audience. In total, more than 18,000 people have taken the educational courses 'Pokrova' and 'Christmas'. Earlier, we reported that the organizers of the educational project gathered teachers from all over Ukraine in Kyiv to introduce them to Ukrainian Christmas traditions.
