Ukraine's UN Mission Head Yelchenko: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Passive In Donbas Conflict Resolution

Yelchenko was speaking in an interview with the European Pravda online publication.

The newly appointed head of Ukraine's permanent mission to the United Nations, Volodymyr Yelchenko, has said that United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is passive in the efforts to resolve the conflict in Donbas.

Yelchenko was speaking in an interview with the European Pravda online publication.

"For example, look at the role of the UN secretary-general in the efforts to resolve our conflict. Frankly speaking, it is close to zero... It seems to me that the current secretary-general of the United Nations could take a much more proactive stance," Yelchenko said.

In particular, he believes that the secretary-general of the United Nations could support establishment of a separate UN office on Donbas and Crimea in Ukraine, in addition to the existing UN mission in Ukraine, which does not require the approval of the UN Security Council.

The head of Ukraine's UN mission also called for the organization to participate more actively in the mine clearance in eastern Ukraine.

Yelchenko said that the passive position of the UN secretary-general might be because his election to the post depends primarily on the five permanent members of the UN Security Council (the United States, Britain, France, China, and Russia).

According to Yelchenko, the election of a new UN secretary-general will begin in summer 2016 and end in December.

Yelchenko believes that Ukraine's membership of the UN Security Council will provide greater opportunity to influence issues that are of interests to Ukraine.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, President Petro Poroshenko appointed Yelchenko to replace Yurii Serheev as the head of Ukraine's mission to the United Nations in December.

The United Nations General Assembly elected Ukraine as a nonpermanent member of the Security Council for the period of 2016-2017 in October.
