Poroshenko Approves Setting 20 February 2014 As Start Date Of Temporary Occupation Of Crimea

Ukrainian News learned this from a statement of the President's press office.

President Petro Poroshenko has approved establishing 20 February 2014 as the date when the temporary occupation of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol began.

Ukrainian News learned this from a statement of the President's press office.

"The President has signed the law establishing 20 February 2014 as the start date of the temporary occupation of the territory of Ukraine," the statement reads.

Thus, the President signed the law "On Making Amendments to Separate Laws of Ukraine Concerning Establishment of the Start Date of the Temporary Occupation" dated 15 September 2015.

The law amends the laws "On Protecting the Rights and Freedoms of Citizens and the Legal Regime in the Temporarily Occupied Territory of Ukraine," and "On Creation of the Free Economic Zone 'Crimea' and the Particulars of Economic Activity in Temporarily Occupied Territory of Ukraine."

The law was passed and approved by the President for specifying the date when the temporary occupation began, eliminating collisions concerning the date and aligning with provisions of the international law with the aim of protecting the rights of the state, the citizens and legal entities.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, on September 15 the parliament established 20 February 2014 as the date when the temporary occupation of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol began.

The parliament introduced a special legal regime and regulated the rights and freedoms of citizens on temporarily occupied territories on 15 April 2014 and designated the land territory of Crimea and Sevastopol, the inland waters of this territory, and the airspace above it as temporarily occupied territories.

On 17 March the parliament adopted a decision recognizing certain districts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions as temporarily occupied territories until withdrawal of all illegal armed groups and their military equipment, fighters, mercenaries, and Russian troops and resumption of full Ukrainian control over the state border of Ukraine.
