Police Illegally Apprehends Ukrainian News Journalist During Crackdown On MAFs, Coffee Machines Owners Storming Impound Lot

Ukrainian News regards the police officers' actions toward Perepelytsia illegal and falling under Article 171 of the Penal Code on obstructing journalist activity.

Police officers illegally apprehended Ukrainian News journalist Dmytro Perepelytsia during a crackdown on owners of MAFs (small architectural forms) and mobile coffee machines who were storming an impound lot at 25 Krasnova Street in Kyiv's Sviatoshynskyi district.

Perepelytsia says police at about 17:45 gathered enough forces to disperse the rally participants who broke out the gate and penetrated the impound lot.

Policemen encircled them and began arresting.

Perepelytsia, who was filming the event with a tablet, was detained by three police officers.

Policemen were not reacting at Perepelytsia saying that he is a journalist, performing his duties with a task from the editorial office.

One policeman snatched the journalist's tablet and two others wrought his hands behind his back.

The newsman was taken to the impound lot, where about a dozen apprehended persons were already lying on the ground.

After that Perepelytsia was allowed to produce his press card.

When law-enforcers made sure that the detained was a journalist they demanded him to stay where the detained activists were kept.

After 40 minutes they took the journalist's testimony and released but did not return the editorial office's tablet, advising to address the patrol police.

At the moment Perepelytsia is heading to the district police department to find out circumstances with disappearance of the tablet.

Ukrainian News regards the police officers' actions toward Perepelytsia illegal and falling under Article 171 of the Penal Code on obstructing journalist activity.

The Agency demands the Internal Affairs Ministry to investigate the unlawful apprehension of the journalist, punish the persons guilty of the incident and also return the seized editorial office's device to the correspondent.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, more than 100 owners of MAFs broke out the gate and penetrated the impound lot at 25 Krasnova Street.

On June 26, the Kyiv Municipal State Administration began taking down travelling retail means and mobile coffee bars having no permits.
