Poroshenko Proposing Rada Abolish Ukraine's Non-Bloc Status

The head of state has designated the bill as urgent for consideration by Parliament.

President Petro Poroshenko is proposing the Verkhovna Rada to abolish Ukraine's non-bloc status, reads a statement made by the President's press service.

It says that Poroshenko has propounded to the Rada draft law on amendments to certain laws of Ukraine concerning Ukraine's abandoning its non-bloc policy.

The head of state has designated the bill as urgent for consideration by Parliament.

The press service underlines that the purpose of the document is to create an additional mechanism of ensuring Ukraine's sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence.

"The non-aligned status of Ukraine that has been stipulated in the Law of Ukraine on the Principles of Domestic and Foreign Policy has turned out to be inefficient in the context of defending the country from the foreign aggression and pressure. The fact that Ukraine has been located in the "gray" buffer zone between the powerful collective defense systems for a long time is an additional challenge for our country," explanatory note reads.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, Poroshenko declared intention to initiate abolition of Ukraine non-bloc status when addressing Poland's Sejm on December 17.
