Poroshenko Promises To Submit Draft Law On Abolition Of Ukraine's Non-Aligned Status To Rada

The president stressed that the non-aligned status that was proclaimed in 2010 was unable to guarantee the territorial integrity and security of Ukraine.

President Petro Poroshenko has promised to submit a draft law on abolition of Ukraine's non-aligned status to the parliament.

Poroshenko was speaking during an address to the Polish Sejm.

"I decided here - in this room - today to announce and return Ukraine to the course of integration into the Euro-Atlantic security space. I will submit a draft law on abolition of the non-aligned status to the parliament immediately after returning to Ukraine," he said.

At the same time, the president said that it would be necessary to hold a national referendum to allow the population to determine Ukraine's foreign policy.

Poroshenko stressed that the non-aligned status that was proclaimed in 2010 was unable to guarantee the territorial integrity and security of Ukraine.

In addition, he said that the guarantee of Ukraine's territorial integrity in the Budapest Memorandum has turned out to be a guarantee that exists only on paper while Ukraine is actually in a state of war.

According to the president, countries of the world must seek new ways of ensuring and guaranteeing security.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, Poroshenko is on an official visit to Poland from December 17 to 18.

The president has thanked Poland for its support during the events on the Independence Square in Kyiv and during the antiterrorist operation.
