Russia Blocks OSCE Decision To Monitor Whole Territory Of Ukraine-Russia Border

Besides, Russia has also vetoed an increase in the number of observers, the statement added.

Russia has blocked the decision of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) to monitor the whole territory of its border with Ukraine, the USA mission to the OSCE said in the statement.

"Despite the repeated inquiries from OSCE member states and partner countries, Russia continues blocking the expansion of border monitoring by the mission deployed at two checkpoints only," the statement said.

Besides, Russia has also vetoed an increase in the number of observers, the statement added.

"Unfortunately, such a step is another missed opportunity for Russia to secure their words and actions and contribute to de-escalating the conflict. Nobody doubts the current mission is ineffective," said U.S. Permanent Representative to the OSCE Daniel Bayer.

The statement noted the 22 October meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council had extended the mandate of its Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine for one month.

The mission is composed of 16 observers at two checkpoints (Donetsk and Hukove).

As Ukrainian News reported, Ukraine insists on the presence of OSCE observers all along the whole border between Ukraine and Russia,

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine stressed on October 21 if Russia blocked the OSCE decision on monitoring the whole territory of the Ukrainian-Russian border, it would bear the responsibility for breaking the relevant provision of Minsk agreements.
