SBU Accuses Russian Intelligence Agencies Of Sending SMS Virus To Subscribers Of Ukrainian Mobile Operators

According to the statement, when a subscriber clicks on the link provided, his mobile telephone is immediately infected by a virus that quickly spreads to all the contacts in the telephone.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) believes that the virus "Hi. A photo for you..." that is being sent to subscribers of Ukrainian telecommunications operators via SMS messages is an informational sabotage planned by the Russian intelligence agencies. The press center of the SBU announced this in a statement.

"The SBU is warning that a planned informational sabotage by the Russian intelligence agencies that involves infecting Ukrainian citizens' mobile telephones with harmful software products from Russian information resources has been taking place in the past few days," the statement said.

According to the SBU, bulk mailing of SMS text messages reading: "Hi. A photo for you: https://soloboro.ru/zml/XXX -XXX-XX-XX (telephone number)" or "Hi. A photo for you: https://motosan.ru/pdc/XXX-XXX-XX-XX" to subscribers of Ukrainian mobile telecommunications companies - Kyivstar, MTS Ukraine, and Astelit - is taking place.

According to the statement, when a subscriber clicks on the link provided, his mobile telephone is immediately infected by a virus that quickly spreads to all the contacts in the telephone.

The SBU has established that this virus unlawfully gathers information about the infected telephone's IMEI code, account balance, and personal data of citizens.

Experts warn that mobile telephones running the Android, Symbian, and Windows Mobile operating systems are vulnerable to this virus.

The SBU has established that these malicious messages are being sent from Moscow (Russia).

Markian Lubkivskyi, an adviser to the chairman of the SBU, said that the SBU and mobile telecommunications operators are jointly taking all possible measures to minimize the negative consequences of this sabotage.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, the MTS Ukraine mobile communications operator (Kyiv) has warned its subscribers about the distribution of the SMS virus "Hi. A Photo for you..." to which owners of Android-based devices are susceptible.

According to MTS Ukraine, after reading the SMS, if a subscriber with an Android device follows the link provided in the SMS message and allows the indicated file to download, a virus is installed in the operating system, and this virus begins to send SMS messages to the contacts in the telephone's address book (the virus may also collect the user's personal data and send them to the intruders' servers).
