17 Killed In Separatist Attack On Refugee Convoy From Luhansk Region On August 18

The press center of the government's "anti-terrorist operation" announced this on Facebook.

Seventeen people were killed when separatists attacked a convoy of refugees from the Luhansk region on August 18.

The press center of the government's "anti-terrorist operation" announced this on Facebook.

"Terrorists attacked a convoy of civilians with mortar shells and Grad [multiple-rocket launchers] near Novosvitlovka-Kraschevate on August 18. The inhumans fired on a vehicle traveling under a white flag. As a result, 17 people died and only six survived. People with burns and injuries of various degrees of severity were taken to hospital in the city of Luhansk. Doctors are doing everything to save the people's lives, and they themselves are still unable to believe that they are alive," the statement said.

According to the statement, militants are shelling the area where the convoy was attacked, thus preventing experts and journalists from reaching the scene.

"It is even impossible to recover all the dead bodies at this time," the statement said.

The leadership of the government's "anti-terrorist operation" stressed that separatists have already managed to place responsibility for the shelling of the convoy on the Ukrainian military.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, the European Commission's President Jose Manuel Barroso has called for an immediate investigation into the shelling of the convoy of refugees from the Luhansk region.
