Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) Elects Onuphrius As Metropolitan

(Ukrainian News, Stepan Smyshliaev, 08/13/2014) A bishops' council of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate has elected metropolitan of Chernivtsi and Bukovyna Onuphrius (Berezovskyi) as a primate of church, metropolitan of Kyiv and all Ukraine, locum tenens of the Kyiv arch-see, a spokesman for the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) press service has informed.

Onuphrius (Berezovskyi) was born on November 5, 1944 in the village Korytne, Chernivtsi Region.

Professed on March 18, 1971; in 1972 graduated from the Moscow School of Theology; in 1988 from the Moscow Ecclesiastical Academy, where he received a scholastic degree of Candidate of Theology.

From 1988 to 1990 he was vicar of the Holy Dormition Pochayiv Lavra.

From December 9, 1990 he was ordained as bishop of Chernivtsi and Bukovyna; in 2000 elevated to the rank of metropolitan.

On February 24, 2014 he was appointed as locum tenens of the Kyiv arch-see.

The press secretary of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate, archpriest George (Kovalenko) says that in the first round of election 36 eparchies supported Onuphrius, 24 supported metropolitan of Boryspil and Brovary Antonius, and nine supported metropolitan of Vinnytsia and Bar Simeon.

In the second round of election more than half of the council members supported Onuphrius, 48 of 74.

Kovalenko underlines, atmosphere during the council was relaxed.

Kovalenko also says that on Wednesday Onuphrius will serve his first prayer as the newly-elected and called metropolitan of Kyiv, and his final entry into office will take place on August 17.

"We look to representatives of all local Orthodox Churches to attend [the enthronement]," he said.

Hereto George underlines, he knows nothing yet about reaction of the Russian Orthodox Church to the electing.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) will hold enthronement of the fresh metropolitan on August 17 in the Holy Dormition Kiev-Pechersk Lavra.

Metropolitan Volodymyr deceased on July 5 at the age of 78.
